If written well, these will be picked up by other marketers and displayed on their site. Of course, you require that your name and website address must remain attached at the bottom. This is free advertising, and it is possible to be posted around the internet.

If you look around the internet, there are many other ways to get the word out about your business. Add some new ones regularly and see what gets the best results.

Health and Safety for Artists

Know the potential dangers of the materials you use

Many of the chemicals found in art supplies are carcinogenic, and can present health risks if not handled properly. Some are potential skin irritants (some Acrylics contain a small amount of ammonia or formaldehyde), some should not be inhaled (pastel dust is very nasty), while others are highly flammable (turpentine).

Most art supply manufactures are extremely safety conscious, and publish full details of possible risks associated with their products.

Don’t be complacent: take the time and effort to find out what the health risks are for the materials you, and observe any recommended precautions.

Do you visit clients in their homes?

If you visit clients in there homes, never visit anyone without leaving details with a friend. Tell them who you are visiting and where you are going . Let them know what time you expect to return home, and arrange to phone when you return to confirm that you are safe. If possible, take a friend with you the first time you visit a new client.

Public Liability Insurance, protects the policyholder in respect of their legal liability for injury or damage to third parties arising out of, and in course of, their business.

Do you allow clients to visit you at home?

In today’s compensation culture, when accidents happen, some people look to blame others. If you allow clients to visit you at home, you have a duty of care to ensure their safety, and there is always a risk they may trip or fall, which could prove very costly.

If you need to meet clients in your home (for example, you may teach from home), then you need third party public liability insurance.

Do you publicly exhibit your work?

Similarly to the above, if you exhibit work, it is always worth checking whether the event organisers have obtained appropriate insurance. You may be required to make your own arrangements.

Networking

The work of an artist is generally solitary, and anyone engaged in this occupation should consider the occasional need to network with other artists.

The benefits of networking

There are a number of benefits to networking, but briefly it allows the sharing of ideas, knowledge of best practice, and prevents feelings of isolation.

For example, you might need occasional technical advice, want to know how others deal with routine administrative tasks (say packing and posting pictures), or maybe just let off steam – to someone that understands!

Internet forums for Artists

There are a number of different means by which networking can be accomplished, but the simplest, and most accessible, is to find and join an Internet artist’s forum.

When choosing a forum, there are two broad considerations: the size and activity of the membership, and the forum’s focus.

The number of members, and number of posts, is usually detailed at the foot of the forum’s home page. A sizeable membership (1000s) is normally an indication that the forum is a lively hub. Small memberships (a few 100) tend to indicate a less thrilling and responsive community.

Membership of a forum with a reasonable level of members/activity, and a narrower focus, can be the most gratifying. You are more likely to feel a kinship with, and derive a benefit from communicating with people who share your particular branch of art. Conversely, with a more general forum there is a greater possibility of meeting people with radically different ideas (the realist and the abstract expressionist struggle to share ideas, or knowledge of best practice).

Since herbal smoking blends do not contain nicotine or other harmful toxins, they are a very safe way to help you to stop smoking gradually. However smoking herbs does affect your lungs, as it is only common sense that smoking anything will affect your respiratory system. They are not addictive and will help rid your body of the toxins. But, “wait a minute” you might say; “smoking cigarettes relaxes me.” Nothing in cigarettes can make or help you actually relax! Quite the opposite in fact; pollutants, irritants and stimulants are present, that affect your well being and health. It messes up and damages your system with prolonged exposure.

Remember the first cigarette you ever puffed, what did it made you felt like? For most of us it was an awful experience. Maybe you got a little dizzy, felt nausea, felt buzzed or heady, began coughing and maybe had watery eyes. As your arteries and blood vessels grow smaller, your heart will beat faster, as less oxygen gets to your lungs, brain and throughout your system, while you are filling up with toxins. The relaxation or feeling of ecstasy that you experience is not a physical symptom but a mental one. You are facing behaviors and rituals that are part of your life’s routine. Smoking herbs will cater to the need to hold something and smoke; in the meantime eliminating the nicotine intake and making the next cigarette seem less desirable. Herbal smoking is an alternative to cut back on cigarettes gradually rather than cold turkey. Smoking Herbs and Herbal Smoke, also has the added bonus of boosting your mood and providing a natural herbal relaxation. Good luck in your efforts to stop smoking, its well worth it!

Ten Top Tips for Better Bedtimes

Getting children into the routine of early bedtimes for younger children, can be a nightmare for most parents. Here are some top tips to help you out

  • As bedtime approaches, prepare your child’s body for rest by turning the lights down a little, discouraging stimulating activities such as TV, computers and loud music.  You may like to burn some calming lavender.  Try to encourage your child to enjoy calming activities such as reading stories, jigsaws and colouring rather than rough and tumble play. You may like to practise some relaxation exercises or simple yoga stretches.
  • Establish a routine that your child becomes familiar with and knows he has to stick to no matter how much he resists – make a decision what time he goes to bed and stick to it.  Let the routine include a lavender bath, a milky drink/fruit picnic, brushing teeth, toilet, and a soothing bedtime story (you could try the beautiful Aladdin’s Magic Carpet by Relax Kids) and finishing off with a long cuddle and lots of reassuring words.  Try to let this routine be as calm and gentle as possible.
  • If there is a deep resistance, have a chat with your child and find out what the underlying problem is – it maybe that she really has a fear of being alone, or is scared of the dark or feels lonely or feels that she is missing out. Talking about her fears and getting lots of attention, understanding and assurance from you will help immensely.
  • Stay as patient as you can and keep the atmosphere as positive as possible – children who feel they have upset their parents as well as facing the night alone, find it even more difficult to relax and sleep.
  • If you can make bedtime a magical time, let her choose her favourite story and cuddle her favourite teddy.  Sprinkle invisible fairy dust in the air or draw a circle of protection around them.  Allow time for children to blow away their worries and fears.
  • A drop of lavender on a tissue near the pillow will help calm him down and be ready for a good nights sleep.  A night light will bring a touch of magic to the room as well as alleviating any fears of being alone in the dark.
  • You may like to incorporate a little massage into their routine.  This will deepen their feeling of security and feeling loved and cherished.  Try stroking their face gently or softly circling the inside of their palm.
  • After their cuddle and kiss goodnight, develop a mantra such as goodnight, goodnight or sleep tight hope the bed bugs don’t bite.  (for younger children). This mantra or repetitive saying will help your child settle.
  • After saying goodnight, be gentle but firm that the time for playing is over and its time to go and play or have an adventure in dreamland. Make sure your child feels he has had your undivided attention and feels totally loved and safe.
  • Dim the lights so she knows it really is time for bed – you may like to play some soft calming music or pop on a relaxation CD.  The Relax Kids CDs are being used by thousands of children throughout the UK and parents have found them invaluable for giving children a tranquil bedtime experience.

If you have a digital radio, you might like to tune into DAB Fun Radio at bedtime or www.funradiolive.com  At 1pm , every weekday, listen to a 4 min Relax Kids relaxation which is perfect for getting the children ready for dreamland.
